I live in a small town in Clark County, Ohio. When people ask where I'm from, I used to say the biggest city we lived near was Dayton, Ohio. There's an Air Force base near us, and that's been a good reference point for many. However, thanks to the current national election cycle, I've learned that I can easily say the city that's actually closest to us and in the county we live in: Springfield, Ohio.
Our family may live outside city limits, but this is where we work, worship, go to school, go to the doctor, shop, and play. By choice, with joy, and without fear. We love raising our children in a multi-cultural community, despite the challenges.
Speak a good word for Springfield, or say nothing at all.
If you truly care about Springfield and our influx of immigrants, I recommend two things:
1) Get your information from our local leaders who are doing the daily work, not from people running for national office who either do not live here or who care more about how it progresses their own platform, popularity, and election results.
Clark County Commissioners:
2) Almost no small city in America could adequately withstand the population explosion we have experienced in this short time. Even while we've received a terrific number of workers needed to fill jobs, as well as many new businesses in Springfield, the city does need help. If you want to give to organizations that are doing the actual work to help care for, educate, and integrate our Haitian friends and neighbors into our community, I have some links. Please give!
(p.s. There is zero proof anyone is eating anyone's pets, but if you think that's true, donate to the soup kitchen, food bank, and food trailer I've linked. If people are hungry, they should be fed, not demonized, and there are good people here in Springfield trying to fill that gap.)
